The night at Muzdalifah

After sunsetLeave 'Arafah calmly
ArrivePray Maghrib and 'Isha
NightStay, rest, remember Allah
FajrPray early, then dhikr and du'a facing the qiblah until it is bright
Before sunriseLeave for Mina
  • Maghrib and 'Isha are joined at Muzdalifah, 'Isha shortened: this joining is the Sunnah (Risalah; Women and Hajj). Ibn 'Uthaymeen allows it especially if tired or short of water. If one fears reaching Muzdalifah only after midnight, pray on the way: 'Isha may not be delayed past midnight (Ibn 'Uthaymeen).
  • The weak may leave at the end of the night to stone before the crowds (Ibn 'Uthaymeen). Sawdah asked permission to leave early because she was heavy, and was allowed (al-Bukhari).
  • Pass through the valley of Muhassir quickly (Risalah).

Day 10: Yawm an-Nahr ('Eid)

Four acts on the day of 'Eid:

1. StoneJamrat al-'Aqabah: seven pebbles, one after another, "Allahu akbar" with each
2. SacrificeThe hady (Tamattu' and Qiran); eat some, give some to the poor
3. Shave or shortenShaving is better for men; women cut a fingertip's length
4. Tawaf al-IfadahIn Makkah, then the Sa'y of Hajj

Stoning, sacrifice and shaving are done in this order if convenient, but there is no sin if one comes before another (Ibn 'Uthaymeen). Tawaf al-Ifadah comes after them; it is better done on the day of 'Eid, and may be delayed (Risalah). Jamrat al-'Aqabah is the jamrah closest to Makkah. The Talbiyah stops when stoning begins. It is Sunnah to put on perfume before going to Makkah for Tawaf al-Ifadah.

Pebbles: each about the size of a date stone; thrown one at a time, not all seven at once; not mud or metal (Risalah).

Leaving ihram in two stages

StageWhenWhat becomes allowed
First release (at-tahallul al-awwal)After stoning, sacrifice and shavingEverything except marital relations
Second release (at-tahallul ath-thani)After Tawaf al-Ifadah and Sa'yEverything, including marital relations

Ibn 'Uthaymeen. In the Maliki school, stoning Jamrat al-'Aqabah alone gives the first release, except for women and hunting (Risalah).

Tawaf al-Ifadah is a pillar: nothing replaces it, and the pilgrim is not fully out of ihram until it is done. Women: see lesson 12 for what to do if a period begins before it.

Key points

  • Muzdalifah: Maghrib and 'Isha, the night, Fajr, dhikr until bright, leave before sunrise.
  • The weak may leave at the end of the night (Ibn 'Uthaymeen); after half the night (ash-Shafi'i, lesson 12).
  • 10th: stone, sacrifice, shave, then Tawaf al-Ifadah; no sin if the first three are out of order.
  • First release after stoning, sacrifice and shaving: all except marital relations.
  • Second release after Tawaf al-Ifadah and Sa'y: everything.
