Lesson Content

Every ihram has two boundaries: a time it may begin, and a place it must begin.

The miqat of time

الْحَجُّ أَشْهُرٌ مَّعْلُومَاتٌ"Hajj is in well-known months."al-Baqarah 2:197
ShawwalMonth 10
Dhul-Qa'dahMonth 11
Dhul-HijjahMonth 12: the rites, 8th to 13th

Entering ihram for Hajj before Shawwal is disliked. 'Umrah has no time limit: it can be done all year (Risalah).

The miqat of place

Whoever intends Hajj or 'Umrah must not pass the miqat of his route without ihram.

  • The people of Iraq, Yemen and Najd who come through Madinah enter ihram at Dhul-Hulayfah, since they will not pass their own miqat again. For the people of Syria, Egypt and North Africa coming through Madinah, it is better to do so, though they still pass al-Juhfah (Risalah).
  • Someone travelling by sea or air enters ihram when level with the miqat.
  • The people of Makkah enter ihram for Hajj from Makkah. For 'Umrah, the miqat is outside the Haram, since every ihram must combine the Haram and outside it (Risalah).
