Men and women

Men only
  • Do not cover the head with anything touching it. Umbrella, car roof, tent: fine. Carrying luggage on the head: fine
  • No shirt, turban, hooded cloak, trousers, or shoes or socks above the ankle
  • Nothing of the same kind: cloak, hat, undershirt
  • If no izar or sandals are found, trousers or shoes may be worn
Women only
  • No niqab or burqa'
  • Uncovering the face is the Sunnah, but if non-mahram men may see her she covers it with something other than a niqab, such as a cloth from her head, even if it touches the face

Ibn 'Uthaymeen

What is allowed

Sandals, rings, glasses, a hearing aid, a watch, washing with unscented soap, washing and scratching the head and body, even if some hair falls out unintentionally. There is no expiation for that (Ibn 'Uthaymeen). Killing harmful animals such as rats, snakes, scorpions and dangerous dogs is allowed (Risalah).

If a restriction is broken out of need: the fidyah

Whoever among you is ill or has an ailment of the head (and shaves), then a ransom of fasting, charity or a sacrifice."al-Baqarah 2:196
FastThree days
FeedSix poor people, two mudd each
SacrificeA sheep

Risalah: the person chooses one of the three

Intercourse in ihram is the gravest of the prohibitions: the Risalah says it invalidates the Hajj absolutely. The scholars apply this to intercourse before the first release from ihram (lesson 10).

Key points

  • No rafath, fusuq or jidal (2:197); keep the prayers; harm no one.
  • Both: hair, nails, perfume, spouse, marriage, gloves, hunting.
  • Men: no head covering touching the head, no stitched shirts, trousers, turbans, shoes above the ankle.
  • Women: no niqab or burqa'; cover the face with another cloth when non-mahram men may see her.
  • Fidyah: fast three days, feed six poor, or sacrifice a sheep.
